Pilgrim Summer Reading Adventures
June 21, 2016 @ 5:15 pm - 6:15 pm
Looking for some good reads and social opportunities this summer? Join one or more summer book discussions facilitated by Pastor Kelly; book descriptions are below. For each book there will be two discussion dates, times and locations, including Tuesdays from 5:15 to 6:15pm at the Tremont Farmer’s Market* in Lincoln Park (bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket and we will meet on the northwest quadrant of the park), and Saturdays from 10:00am to 11:00am at Panera, 14701 Detroit Road in Lakewood. In both places you have the option to buy a refreshment, snack or meal if you choose. We have a copy of each book available for loan, and two of each available for purchase by May 15. *Pilgrim is the backup location on Tuesdays in the event of rain.
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande
Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession’s ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families (rather than extended life, even at the expense of quality).
Dr. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person’s last weeks or months may be rich and dignified. Full of eye-opening research and riveting storytelling, Being Mortal asserts that medicine can comfort and enhance our experience even to the end, providing not only a good life but also a good end.
